The COVID-19 pandemic has brought health systems to their knees, and the need for transformation and innovation in healthcare is more critical than ever. Health managers and leaders are required to have the courage, compassion, and vision to guide their teams through this challenging time. Research has shown that there are several key areas that health managers need to focus on to transform healthcare, including compassionate and collective leadership, meeting the core needs of staff, developing strong team and cross boundary working, and self-compassion.
The question of how health managers can lead in developing compassionate and collective leadership to develop cultures of high quality, continually improving and compassionate care to meet the needs of patients and communities is critical. Healthcare leaders must ensure that compassion, high quality care, and innovation are at the heart of management and leadership of healthcare systems. They must also ensure the well-being and growth of the staff who provide healthcare.
Drawing on the evidence from healthcare services, the experience of the pandemic, case examples of outstanding practice, and international reviews into healthcare workers’ mental health and wellbeing, this session will provide practical guidance necessary to help ensure that compassionate and collective leadership is integrated into healthcare management and leadership.
Panelists will describe how managers can lead their teams, using the principles of compassionate and collective leadership, to ensure high quality care and the continuous quality improvement and innovation that will enable transformation of healthcare teams and organisations for the future.
The session will feature keynote speaker Prof Michael West, Visiting Fellow at The King’s Fund; Ms Lucy Nugent, Chief Executive Officer at Tallaght University Hospital; Dr Miklós Szócska, Director of Health Services Management Training Centre at Semmelweis University. Prof Americo Cicchetti, Director at ALTEMS – Graduate School of Health Economics and Management, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore will facilitate the discussion.
