Partnership for Health System Sustainability and Resilience: innovation and early intervention among key drivers for strengthening health systems
Healthcare systems worldwide are facing numerous challenges, including resource constraints, increasing demands, ageing populations, non-communicable diseases, and the impacts of climate change. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exposed weaknesses in health systems, highlighting the need to invest in their resilience and sustainability to effectively tackle future crises.
In response to this, the Partnership for Health System Sustainability and Resilience (PHSSR) was established in 2020 by the London School of Economics, the World Economic Forum, and AstraZeneca. This collaboration brings together academic, non-governmental, life sciences, healthcare and business organisations at the regional and national levels to develop evidence-informed policy recommendations aimed at improving the sustainability and resilience of healthcare systems.
One of the key recommendations from a recent PHSSR study emphasizes the importance of investing in population-based screening and early diagnosis. It highlights the need to define specific objectives and performance evaluation criteria for the implementation of population screening programs. Furthermore, robust plans should be developed for maintaining essential care, including vital screening services, during crisis scenarios. Additionally, fostering a culture of innovation has emerged as a crucial element in bolstering the sustainability of healthcare systems, enhancing their adaptability and scalability to meet the evolving needs of future populations.
To address these concerns, a focus session has been organised to discuss the significance of preventive care and the policies required to incentivise and prioritise early detection programmes and interventions. Panelists will explore the arguments that resonate the strongest with decision-makers when it comes to investing in early detection programs. Lastly, the discussion will address how technology and innovation can be effectively harnessed to enhance the quality of care delivered to patients.
