The session ‘The future of healthcare operations management: from capacity optimisation to value-based healthcare’ will explore the intersection of healthcare delivery and operations management. Over the past two decades, scholars and professionals focused on aspects like efficiency, productivity, control of variability, capacity planning, and utilisation in healthcare operations. However, the current context has brought new challenges that require a different approach.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created delays and shortages in the healthcare system that have forced operations managers to find more efficient ways to manage production assets and people. In addition, healthcare operations need to be redesigned to support value creation in the perspective of patients’ care, considering trends such as chronic diseases, ageing populations, and the integration of healthcare with social care.

This session at #EHMA2023 will discuss the new roles, goals and responsibilities of healthcare operations management in an era of value-based healthcare; and the need for scholars to explore new approaches and perspectives that can offer robust and significant insights to inform managers and policymakers.
